Resolved Stellar Populations of Super - Metal - Rich Star Clusters in the Bulge of M 31

چکیده
We have applied the MCS image deconvolution algorithm (Magain et al. 1998) to HST/WFPC2 V , I data of three M 31 bulge globular clusters (G170, G177, and G198) and control fields near each cluster. All three clusters are clearly detected, with an increase in stellar density with decreasing radius from the cluster centers; this is the first time that stars have been resolved in bulge clusters in the inner regions of another galaxy. From the RGB slopes of the clusters and the difference in I magnitude between the HB and the top of the RGB, we conclude that these three clusters all have roughly solar metallicity, in agreement with earlier integrated-light spectroscopic measurements. Our data support a picture whereby the M 31 bulge clusters and field stars were born from the same metal-rich gas, early in the galaxy formation.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

This paper presents 3600—5400Å integrated spectra of 19 globular clusters (or candidates) projected on the central regions of M 31, r ≤ 5.3 ′ (≈1.2 kpc). We check the cluster nature of these objects, and derive their ages, metallicities and reddenings. From the initial sample , 16 objects turn out to be true star clusters, two are Galactic dwarf stars, and one is a high redshift background gala...
متن کاملSuper star clusters as probes of massive star evolution and the IMF at extreme metallicities
Young super star clusters and young compact massive star forming regions can provide useful information on their burst properties (age, burst duration, SFR), the upper end of the IMF and yield new constraints on the evolution of massive stars. Through the study of their stellar populations we can in particular extend our knowledge on massive stars to extreme metallicities unavailable for such s...
متن کاملBulge Globular Clusters in Spiral Galaxies
There is now strong evidence that the metal-rich globular clusters (GC) near the center of our Galaxy are associated with the Galactic bulge rather than the disk as previously thought. Here we extend the concept of bulge GCs to the GC systems of nearby spiral galaxies. In particular, the kinematic and metallicity properties of the GC systems favor a bulge rather than a disk origin. The number o...
متن کاملThe Age of the Galactic Bulge
The dominant stellar population of the central bulge of the Milky Way is old, with roughly solar metallicity. The age is very similar to that of the old metal rich bulge globular clusters and to 47 Tucanae, which has an age of 13 Gyr. Stellar composition measurements from Keck/HIRES confirm that bulge stars are enhanced in Mg and Ti. New HST/NICMOS data are consistent with an old stellar popula...
